Just seven mares have been confirmed to line up for this Friday’s Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
Returning to the winner’s circle with an exceptional performance in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) last time out on September 13th, Commanding Jewel has been confirmed in the final field for the 2014 Stocks Stakes.
Claiming an impressive total of five wins and three minor places from her nine competitive starts so far, Commanding Jewel spent close to a year on the sidelines following a string of unfortunate injuries but has returned to racing in slick form; finishing third in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) in her only other start prior to the Let’s Elope.
A Group 1 champion, the Commands mare took out the 2012 edition of the Thousand Guineas (1600m) in what was just her fifth competitive appearance on course.
Allocated the wide barrier 7, Team Corstens are confident champion jockey Damien Oliver will once again get the best from their runner this weekend.
Finishing second to Commanding Jewel in the 2014 Thousand Guineas, Dear Demi has also been confirmed in the final field for the 2014 Stocks Stakes.
A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Dear Demi finished third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and continued to build in form and classy on her way to third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) most notably.
Unable to figure in contention in four starts over autumn, the Dehere mare has quickly built to the task over two starts this time in; following up a performance for fifth in the Cockram Stakes with a hard-fought second in the Let’s Elope Stakes last time out.
Veteran jockey Jim Cassidy has been confirmed to take the ride in the Stocks Stakes and will leave from the ideal barrier 2.
Performing to a high standard over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Solicit finished seventh in the Let’s Elope Stakes first-up but should be far better for the competitive run in Friday’s Stocks Stakes.
Winning both the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at the beginning of her autumn prep, the Street Cry mare was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and fourth in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) on March 21st, but nearly responded in the best way possible when finishing second in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) a fortnight later.
Confirmed to target the a berth in either of the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate this time in, Solicit will be partnered by jockey Damien Lane in the 2014 Stocks Stakes and will leave from barrier 5.
