The 2011 Stocks Stakes, one of the support races on the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day programme at Moonee Valley this Saturday, has drawn a final field of 14 classy mares with the Peter Moody-trained King’s Rose the clear favourite to win.
Scheduled to run as Moonee Valley Race 8 at 4:20pm (local), the $200,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) is a weight-for-age mares’ race that serves an excellent guide to upcoming spring majors including the 2011 Cox Plate.

The Stocks Stakes 2011 field is lead by King’s Rose, a former Group 1 winning Kiwi mare that made an excellent Australian race debut last start beating home a crack field to win the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
King’s Rose has drawn barrier seven for Saturday as she looks to go back-to-back down under with the stable’s ace hoop Luke Nolen aboard and give connections a better idea of where to take her this spring, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at the Valley on October 22 the grand aim.
Currently Luxbet have the in-form King’s Rose at a quote of $2.70 and firming, so now is the time to back her before more money pours in for the stablemate of Black Caviar.
There are only three other Stocks Stakes 2011 acceptors that Luxbet have deemed worthy of a single-figure quote:
#7 Pinker Pinker ($4) – Has had support firming in from $4.20 to $4 at Luxbet since betting opened. Greg Eurell’s Reset four-year-old has drawn awkwardly in barrier 11, but the punters aren’t shying away after her impressive victory in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday. She beat another Moody mare then (Mid Summer Music), but on such a short turnaround she may struggle to do so again here.
#1 Lady Lynette ($7) – Ran third in the Stocks Stakes 12 months ago, looking to go two better this year from barrier six with Nicholas Hall in the mount. Has a great Moonee Valley record and wasn’t far off them when coming from a wide gate to finish fourth in the Let’s Elope.
#8 Absolutley ($8) – Michael Kent-trained daughter of Redoute’s Choice, won the Group 1 AJC Oaks at Randwick last season. Resumed with a good first-up fifth in the Memsie Stakes, ran a very powerful final 1400 metres and will improve over more distance.
Other notable mares lining up for their shot of 2011 Stocks Stakes glory this weekend including defending champion and market mover Avienus ($26 – $16) out to break a 12 month drought, South Australian raider and Group 1 placegetter Southern Speed ($18) and Mark Kavanagh’s impeccably bred Street Cry mare Midnight Martini ($12) with the inside running from barrier one.
