The opening Group race meeting for the 2010-11 racing season at Moonee Valley Racecourse will take place on Saturday September 10, the Melbourne Spring Carnival race day featuring three black-type features including the 2011 WH Stocks Stakes.
While the meeting’s headline race will be the $300,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), a weight-for-age showdown contested by gallopers heading towards the lucrative 2011 Cox Plate, the $200,000 Group 2 WH Stocks Stakes (1600m) also provides some great early season betting action and horse racing odds at Luxbet.
A mares-only showdown, the Stocks Stakes field is often complied of horses with more lucrative spring features in their sights including the $350,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in a fortnight’s time.
It is also an excellent lead-up race to one of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival features races, the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) held on Victoria Derby Day on the Saturday before the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
In 2009 WH Stocks Stakes winner Zarita went on to run a credible third behind Typhoon Tracy in that year’s Myer Classic showdown.
WH Stocks Stakes 2011 nominations will be taken by Racing Victoria on September 5 followed by the final field of acceptances on September 7 and published here first so bookmark this site.
One mare that has been named as likely WH Stocks Stakes entry this year is New Zealand-trained Barinka.
