Avienus Wins 2010 Stocks Stakes as Faint Perfume & Valdemoro Fail to Place

September 13th, 2010

On Saturday the Mark Webb-trained Avienus claimed an upset win in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1400m) at Moonee Valley, the five-year-old beating home a field full of fancied contenders for the 2010 Caulfield Cup including the Bart Cummings-trained Faint Perfume.

Reset mare Avienus ($12) was super impressive as Craig Williams rode her to her maiden Group level victory, finishing three lengths ahead of runner-up Belscenica ($16) with Lady Lynette ($6) in third.

In our Stocks Stakes Preview we suggested Lady Lynette was a top Each Way bet at Sportsbet and any punters that followed out advice would have enjoyed a win!

We picked Lady Lynette as a good Each Way bet at Sportsbet in our Stocks Stakes preview and were right!

The two top fancies in the 2010 Stocks Stakes betting were Faint Perfume ($5) and Valdemoro ($4.60), both mares failing to live up to expectations finishing ninth and 13th respectively.

Despite the ninth place finish, the Bart Cummings-trained Faint Perfume ran the fastest final 200m in the Stocks Stakes showing that she is still on track for a big spring campaign.

Saturday’s Stocks Stakes field featured many mares heading towards the Caulfield Cup on October 16 including Avienus, who is now a $31 chance to win at Sportsbet with Moudre still the favourite at $10.

Webb will next run Avienus in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on September 24, hoping to move the mare up the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup as she is currently sitting 55th in the ballot.

Moonee Valley’s race card on Saturday was headlined by the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) where the Mark Kavanagh-trained Whobegotyou scored back-to-back wins, while the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m) was won by the odds-on favourite Hay List.
